THE Anglican church’s Diocese of Manicaland appreciates the role played by the church’s for-bearers in sacrificially building schools for Zimbabweans, an official has said.
Head of the Manicaland Diocese, Bishop Erick Ruwona said this last week at the church’s 34th anniversary celebrations in Rusape.
The church has set its sights on raising more than USD$300 000 for the purposes of building a Girls’ College that should open its doors to the first students in February next year.
“In memory of this year’s commemoration, funds will be raised to build a Girls’ College in Rusape to promote the education of the girl child in Zimbabwe. Our forebears indeed gave generously and sacrificed for this noble cause to promote the education of a Zimbabwean child but the girl child remains disadvantaged,” Bishop Marowa said.
He said the idea is in line with this year’s theme of the Day of the African Child which is “Accelerating Collective Efforts to End Child Marriages in Africa.”
“Only a girl who has been empowered through education can sense that her rights are being violated and can fight to reclaim them.
As a church we want to be associated with the good morals we preach.
“In fact, the girls and women have proved that given the opportunities they can excel in various professions, just like their male counterparts.
