Monday 29th of June was a historic day for Prince Edward School as it marked the re-launch of their school’s newspaper called The Hararian.

The launch took place at the school with the headmaster Dr Aggrippa Sora expressing joy and pride in having school’s gentlemen who have taken it upon themselves to continue with a tradition that was started in 1911.

The first edition of The Hararian was published in 1911, then it was called ‘The Haralian’ and was last published in the late ‘80s but the schools saw it essential to revive the tradition that so proudly identifies with the school.

“The Hararian was last published in the 1980’s and it is with great honour to announce the re-launch of the paper. Prince Edward School is the first and only school in Zimbabwe to have their own newspaper.

“This will not only put the school under good light but also give the gentlemen who write these articles experience and recognition which they can use later on in their lives if they wish to carry out careers in journalism.

“The aim of the paper is not to make a profit but help expose those that would have achieved good things be it in sport, academics and cultural activities as well,” said Dr Sora at the launch.

Dr Sora then took the chance to introduce the editorial team.

The editorial team comprises of Takunda Gumbu as the Editor, Michael Kanengoni Deputy-Editor, Takuramunashe Mutungira News Editor with Arnold Banda coming in as the Sports Editor.

Irvine Gondo was appointed as the Entertainment Editor, Darren Gasura being the Religions Editor while Stanislaus Masike comes in as the Marketing Manager.

Gumbu gave a brief address at the launch saying: “We would like the paper to contain quality information that will inform, educate and entertain the readers. At times things happen within the school but very few people are aware of the achievements that some of our gentlemen are making and this will be a good way of getting them recognised and open doors for them as well as us the writers,” said Gumbu.

Gumbu added that schools and pupils throughout Zimbabwe are welcome to contribute to the paper whose next publication is set for July 23 2015. He also thanked the gentlemen of Prince Edward for their support and that the paper is open to contributions from other schools.

Members of the Printing Club revived the paper with the help of teacher in charge Norman Taruvinga, Andrew Mutaramutswa of the schools’ Print Shop and Paul Munyuki who is the senior consultant at Innovative Solutions and Consultancy and also a Sports Reporter with The Herald.

The club had been publishing their schools termly newsletters namely the Prince Edward News and Prince Edward School Times but these were merged to come up with The Hararian Newspaper.

First distribution was at the Zimbabwe versus Kenya rugby game that was held at PE’s Jubilee field on June 13. There were many positive comments and much support from the schools old boys who felt that truly the gentlemen are ‘’Keeping the torch ablaze’’.

The paper is also distributed to schools throughout Zimbabwe, is published three times a term and other schools are allowed to contribute their own articles through our email address [email protected]
