Versatile gospel artiste Mudiwa Mutandwa has shown a great stride in the hip hop genre.

Affectionately known as Mudiwahood, The “Ndaita Mari” hitmaker is still going strong, with two tracks rocking Star Fm’s air waves.

His flare in pursuing hip hop on the gospel front has coerced other artistes to have a take on the seemingly unpopular genre on the local scene.

The tracks “Number 1” and “Mwana waMambo” have claimed their place on the Gospel Greats top 20 chart show hosted by Leander Kandiero every Sunday evening.

Mudiwa’s “Number 1” was voted Christian hip hop Song of the Year at the inaugural 2014 Hip Hop Awards. The track has since September last year remained on the charts.

“I got inspiration for penning this song (Mwana wamambo ) from John 10 v 34 which says, ‘Mwana wamambo ndimambo, Jesu ndiMambo saka mwana waJesu ndiMambo.’ We are little gods,” echoed Mudiwa who acknowledges Prophet Eubert Angel as his mentor.

The offings are both from his latest 16 track album titled Mwana waMambo which he released last March.

“I am not a rapper who happens to preach. But I am a preacher who happens to rap. Most of my songs are biblically inspired.

“They converse about God so I am a preacher,” highlighted the 30-year-old artiste.

A holder of three degrees, a BSC (Hon) in Economics, Psychology and an MBA in Finance, Mudiwa is also a motivational speaker.

The gospel hip hop award winner said Zimbabwean music and its musicians have come of age.

“Our music is expanding especially gospel hip hop. We are almost ready to reach international standards, and I am humbled to be part of the successful bandwagon.

“It’s purely an election by grace,” preached Mudiwa.

Mudiwa hinted that next month, he will be dropping a single titled “Vane godo Vandikoniwa”.

Even though most gospel artistes have been sceptical about this genre which has largely associated with gangsters and thugs, Mudiwa remains undeterred.
