… Mt Hope crowned league champs
WHO said pastors cannot pass the ball accurately, and that church ushers cannot shoot accurately? Well, you should have been at Vainona Primary School to witness it all as hundreds of congregants from the Church of Christ converged for their annual sports day.
Brothers and sisters from across the church’s various districts showcased their sporting talent in an assortment of disciplines that ranged from football, netball, tug of war, athletics to volleyball.
It was apparent from the onset that netball was the crowd puller and Kuwadzana Church of Christ did not disappoint its followers as the congregation scooped gold.
Zimbabwean Christian College (ZCC) proved that they are not only famed for producing pastors but they are also a Christian school laden with sports enthusiasts.
They came second in the netball competition, Christ Church of Hatcliffe (CCH) came third while Domboshawa could only settle for fourth.
While Greendale Church of Christ were probably the best dressed team in the football competition, they also sailed past all resistance on their way to the podium.
Church of Christ Hatcliffe dominated the track events but they sweated for it, as sprinters from Budiriro and Greendale refused to give in without a shift.
Martin Chikwakwani of CCH won the youths 100m final, his fellow congregant Kelvin Chishiri came second while Munashe Kudakwashe of Greendale came third.
Tendekai Hwara of CCH won the Under 14 100m race and so did McAlvin Mhishi from the same congregation, who clinched the Under 10 race.
In the men’s fellowship category, Tinashe Terera of Budiriro came out tops followed closely by Pastor Chifuniro of ZCC.
Anisha Chokuda of CCH won the girls’ 100 m with Tanyaradzwa Kabungaidze and Lien Nyamusowa from the same congregation coming second and third respectively.
“The purpose of these games was to fundraise for the building of a larger church here in Harare.
“We invited all the congregants from Harare region so that we have fun and at the same time raise funds for the new building,” said pastor Chakanyuka.
Mount Hope runs away with the Harare Christian Soccer League
It was great getting in touch with Derrick Mawire of the Harare Christian Soccer League once again.
He wrote to inform us that Mount Hope are the champions of the HCSL.
“We are an inter denomination league and you once did a piece in your column about the Christian Champions League of which our league is part of.
“We would like you to tell the nation that our league, the Harare Christian Soccer League, is ending first week of October but we already have the league champions,” wrote Mawire.
A transfiguration weekend in Chitungwiza
The Chitungwiza Christian League hosts the first round of the Transfiguration Cup this weekend, with nine matches lined up across the dormitory town. According to Fungai Ngwerume, the league’s spokesperson, the Transfiguration Cup was introduced to help transform the souls of new Christians.
“Before every game there will be a sermon, we need to transform the souls which have been brought to Christ since the beginning of the season,” he said.
