The Rotarian Club Harare CBD on Tuesday donated furniture to Hunyani Primary School in Chinhoyi.
Hundreds of pupils at the farm school are forced to learn while seated on dusty floors.
Pupils at the school learn in old tobacco barns and their main block of classes is an old building that used to be used for storage of chemicals during the colonial times.
The Hunyani Primary School head William Tiki said the donation by the Rotarian club came at the right time as his school was in desperate need for furniture.
“We are really happy that the Rotarian Club Harare CBD has brought us furniture as the majority of our pupils here were learning while seated on the floors. Our classrooms are in a deplorable state and this gesture by the Rotarian club will go a long way in alleviating our crisis.
“Another major challenge we have here is that of water and our pupils bring water from their homes and as you know water is a basic necessity. We struggle to get clean and safe water to drink as we have 710 students here and we still expect more to come.
“We also do not have electricity here and in some classes students and their teachers struggle to read and write as there is no enough illumination in the rooms.
“When I first came here to head the school I was always at loggerheads with my members of staff thinking that they were not doing their job well as the majority of students’ handwriting was so bad.

“I later realised that the children were writing directly on the floor and there is no way they were going to write legibly.
“There is need to resuscitate electricity supply here as the cables were vandalised long back.
“In some rooms there is no light even during the day and some students cannot write school work as they cannot see in that darkness.

“There is need to erect proper school structures but at present it is a pipe-dream as the parents struggle to pay US$15 fees we charge a term. We appeal to the corporate world to assist our school so that we empower these children with education as they are the future of the nation,” he said.
