Zanu-PF has congratulated the Cuban Communist Party for its diplomatic victory in restoring ties with the United States, but warned the island nation to treat the development with caution.

In a statement yesterday, Zanu-PF secretary for information and publicity Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo hailed the release of the three remaining members of the “Cuban Five” patriots who had been in US custody from the 1990s on trumped up espionage charges.

Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez have now all regained their freedom. Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez were released in September 2011 and February 2014, respectively, while the other three were freed last Wednesday. Ambassador Khaya Moyo said, “We registered our utmost disgust at the continued incarceration of the remaining members of the Cuban patriots.”

He said America’s actions must be treated with vigilance, especially after the normalisation of relations with Cuba coincided with the imposition of more sanctions on Russia.

Ambassador Khaya Moyo said progressive forces should note that while Cuba had won a battle towards justice and restoration of the rule of international law, the US overtures may not be as innocent as they appeared.

He said Zanu-PF would continue to work with the CCP to fight for the full lifting of all sanctions on Zimbabwe and Cuba by the US.
