Prophet Walter Magaya breaks into laughter as journalists grilled him with questions in Botswana last week

Prophet Walter Magaya isn’t stepping on the brakes. The Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries leader had his debut crusade outside Zimbabwe when he went to Botswana last week.

And he says it was the beginning of greater things. After deliverance and miracle sessions that were aired on television, the prophet — who has a Catholic background — faced up to questions from journalists. Here are some of them, and his answers.

Q: How do you put together resources to fund your ministry?

A: I have partners some who are in Australia, London, America and other nations who said ‘‘go to Botswana and we will support you’’. I have partners who understand my vision who support me financially.

There are people who have been healed confidentially, popular people who have been healed confidentially and they knew that their life was about to end. And they were told by doctors that you may die next month, you may die next year, they were pronounced with HIV, they were pronounced with blood cancer but they have been healed.

But they don’t want to be known so they support financially silently.

Q: What’s your net worth? Do you have in your name properties, buildings and investments?

A: I am very, very rich spiritually. I am a trillionaire . . . because I am very very rich spiritually. No I do not have anything per-se in my name. Most of what I have is in the name of the ministry and in the name of people I have adopted those are whom I invest in, because I believe my life is of empowering people.

Q: When you bring secular musicians to play in church doesn’t that counteract the purpose?

A: What I am fighting right now is religion. People go to church and act in the spirit. People go to church and pretend that they are holy. How do you tell that you are in the spirit when you go to church sick and you are coming out sick?

Are you telling me that you were in the spirit and the spirit could not heal you? What is being in the spirit is the main question? So people think that crying, lifting your hands and acting like you are in the spirit . . . that’s being in the flesh.

So the actual thing is church has brought this phenomena that the way you sit, the way you pray — (but) the only thing that determines that you are in the spirit, and as the Bible says, are the works.

Because the Holy Spirit is not a silent spirit! Holy Spirit is a dominant spirit, shows and heals. Holy Spirit delivers, Holy Spirit will never leave someone sick.

Q: Do you speak in tongues?

A: Yes I do. But what I have realised is 90 percent of the tongues being spoken in churches are not from God; they are from the pastor. Yes 90 percent of the churches that are speaking in tongues … don’t speak in tongues because of the Holy Spirit; they speak in tongues because of the pastor.

That’s why you can tell that these tongues are of a person from Zaoga, this one from AFM because tongues are like fingerprints they must be different they are given as according to the Holy Spirit.

So most tongues are there to cover the natural feeling for a person to say ‘ah I am satisfied, I have prayed’. But the truth is it’s more in the flesh.

Q: What’s the thing with moving with people around you?

A: Do you want me to pray for you so that you see what will happen? Then you will see why I need these guys.

What happens with the prophetic ministry is anything can happen anytime. Sometimes I get into a lift beside someone, they manifest. Yesterday we had a meeting; there were complaints about people manifesting at the border. Someone manifested in Francistown so if I am alone and someone manifests how do I handle that?

That’s how I manage my gift. It’s not like they are bodyguards they know how to handle people.

A demon can defeat 15 people unless they are physically fit so they need to be well built. Have you ever seen the Pope moving? How many people does he move with? 20, 80 people but no demon manifesting.

My case is on the issue of demons because anything can happen at any time. As you grow in terms of your name you also grow enemies. That’s why I move around with these guys.

Q: People question the reality of deliverance and miracles?

A: On the issue of being healed and getting sick; again it’s written in the Bible: If you are delivered from one demon, seven demons will come. Well-stated!

And you will be found worse than what you were before. So it is up to the person who was delivered to maintain their deliverance.

If your pastor delivers you its up to you to maintain your deliverance otherwise you will be found worse than the way you were. So my encouragement to people is you have to learn to maintain your deliverance and enjoy your testimony.

In our case, whoever is healed goes through counselling to be taught how to maintain their deliverance.

Whoever is delivered I give them a book on how to maintain their deliverance.

I have written notes, I have written points, I have written verses which they can read and see how they can maintain their deliverance.

But it’s an obvious thing there is no devil who is going to celebrate your testimony with you. He will come back so you have to be ready to fight him again.
