CHOIR competitions have always been a part of the church because people from all walks of life enjoy gospel music. Last Saturday, choirs from United Methodist Harare West district competed in Kuwadzana, belting out the title song, Bring soul to Christ.

Among the churches that participated at this event were Borrowdale, Inner city, Dzivarasekwa, King David, Dzivarasekwa extension, Kuwadzana, Amazing Grace and Revelation.

In group “A”, Inner City won through both the set piece song, (Mwari baba wedu) and their choice track, (Mwari baba mune nyasha huru), receiving $175 and two floating trophies.

Kuwadzana came out second in all categories and received $150. In third place for the own choice category, there was a tie between King David and Mabelreign South circuit, with both groups receiving $50 each.

For the set piece song, Amazing Grace came third and received $90, while King David took the fourth position and received $50 for their effort. In group “B”, first and second positions in the own choice category went to Granary and Borrowdale respectively, walking away with $50 each.

Choir Chairperson of Harare West Province, Mr Shepard Matsindikwa said he was happy with the performances of the choirs as they spread the word of God through music. “This is not about fame but spreading the word of God. We should try to please the Lord every day,” said Mr Matsindikwa.

Coordinator of the choir competitions, Mrs Joselyn Hoto was appreciative of the support they received from sponsors and participants.

“Because we planned this event with God at heart, it went on as planned without any hitches, showing that it was well calculated. We thank everyone who contributed towards making this event a success.”

Last year, Kuwadzana scooped first prize and took the trophy home. Reverend Edmore Maphosa of the United Methodist highlighted in her speech the power of music.

“We have managed to preach the word of God through music, we also managed to unify and entertain the people,” Rev Maphosa said.
Harare West district secretary, Mrs Everlyn Mwandira said she was pleased with the number of participants who are increasing annually.

“We are happy because many assemblies who did not have choirs at their circuits are rising. After this event, those who took up to position five are proceeding to Zimbabwe West Annual Conference Music Festival in Gweru on November 19.

Meanwhile, in the United Methodist Zimbabwe East Annual Conference Musical Festival held last Saturday in Chisipite, Seke South Circuit came out victors for both the set piece and own choice and walked away with a cash prize and trophy.

They shrugged off stiff competition from St Andrews, St Mathews and St Stevens. Seke South circuit Pastor Maria Kaitano was over the moon after her circuit’s victory. She heaped praises on choir master Simba Magurei and his team for the sterling performance.
