AS the curtain is slowly coming down on the year, music enthusiasts are gearing up for the ultimate crowning of the most outstanding song of the year during the Star Fm Gospel Greats top 100 show.
The process will be conducted through tracking the performance of the songs.
Gospel Greats, a two hour weekly show that is aired between 6pm and 8pm every Sunday on Star FM, plays 20 of the country’s hottest gospel songs that would have been selected through listeners’ votes.
Considering the recent performance trends of some tracks that have been featuring on the show, there is no clear cut contender for the song of the year tag.
In fact, there are several tracks that have dominated the top five on a weekly basis.
Reverend Tapera Chivaviro’s ‘Ebenezer’ has been maintaining presence in the top five for over 15 weeks despite failing to take the pole position.
Another favorite is ‘Kuregerera in Advance’, a track from Takesure Zamar Ncube and the Worship Addicts. The song has featured in the show for 15 weeks so far.
Award winning United Family International Church product Michael Mahendere’s song ‘Makanaka Jesu’ should also hold fort having made its mark among the best five on several occassions.
Not to be underrated is high flying Pastor Josh Kays’ song ‘Aripo’ which has maintained first position on the show for more than 10 weeks so far.
Unlike in previous years, a new chapter has been opened as church choirs are proving to be forces to reckon with.
The ascendancy of choirs such as the Heartfelt Team and Zoe Life Changing is commendable.
Gospel devotees seem to have fallen in love with Heartfelt Team’s ‘Jakuchichi’ which also has its place among the great hits. Janet Manyowa’s ‘Ndomira Pamuri’ and ‘Tarisa’ have also placed her on the limelight this year.
Young Kuda Mutsvene is already basking in the glory of winning an award with his song ‘Mhururu’ at this year’s Permican event and his song has the potential to hold fort and get the ultimate prize.
Patience Masiyambiri–Mandizha’s ‘Mirira’, Sharon Manyonganise’s ‘Akatendeka’, Tembalami’s ‘L.O.V.E’, Mpostori Wency’s ‘Mvura Yakawanda’ and Pastor G’s ‘Unstoppable’ are also some of the tracks that are likely to swing votes and cause major upsets.
