Tobacco farmers pocket US$247 million

Tobacco worth US$247 million has been traded at auction floors countrywide during the current marketing season, representing a drop from US$271 million grossed in the same period a year ago, statistics from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) show.

About 83 million kg of the cash crop had been sold by May 13 at an average price of US$2,98 per kg.

However, about 101 million kg had been auctioned in the same period last year.

The highest price achieved to date is US$6,50 per kg, while $0,10 per kg is the lowest price so far.
