SUPPORT UNIT men won their maiden Harare Volleyball Association League title while JS Harare claimed a record sixth women’s title as the battle for honours came to a thrilling end last weekend. The newly crowned men’s champions finished with 35 points, 10 clear of last season’s winners Black Rhinos.

The police outfit’s head coach Itsalang Abu Basutu credits the maiden title to hard work.
“It was through hard work and a lot of focus that we achieved this. The guys were willing to work and it made it all easy, team spirit was okay, we must continue to work hard,” he said.

The 45-year-old coach also acknowledged the support he got from his backroom staff.
“A coach does not win alone, but all the support he gets from his technical team and many people who support the team plays an important role in the success of the team.

“I would like to thank everyone associated with this team for working hard towards the realisation of this dream,” he said.
For JS Harare a season that brought a record sixth title has been slapped with a “hugely satisfactory” tag by veteran coach Martin Dururu.

“I say the season was hugely satisfactory for the girls because they achieved most of the goals they set for themselves,” he said.“We managed to win a record sixth league title and we are very pleased with that.

“My players exhibited maturity and growth in their game. One of our major thrusts was execution of individual skills and the mental approach to the game.“We are now looking forward to the National League coming up in a few weeks.

We want to be in the right frame of mind and learn from lessons picked during the HVL because development is a continuous process.”
Meanwhile, Harare Polytechnic were relegated while ZRP, Red Wolves and ZRP (second team) will be involved in promotional play-offs.
