A school head in Gweru and his deputy were last week arrested for allegedly leaking three 2014 Ordinary Level examination papers.

Initially, only two teachers and a cook were implicated in the leaking of Mathematics Paper One.

It, however, later emerged that Whata Secondary School head Clever Chimuka was the mastermind behind the scam and that Integrated Science Paper Three and Commerce Paper Two were also leaked.

Chimuka, deputy head Thulani Nkomo, mathematics teacher Praise Dube, Mkoba Teachers’ College cook Shepherd Munjanja as well as Bismarck Gumbo and Brighton Tamboona, both student teachers, are being charged with leaking the examination papers.

They appeared before Gweru regional magistrate Mr Tendai Madanhire, who remanded them out of custody on US$100 bail each.

On October 25, Chimuka and Nkomo allegedly opened envelopes containing the three examination papers and gave them to Dube who works at Presbyterian Private College.

The head and deputy, it is alleged, sold copies of handwritten examination questions to candidates in and around Gweru.

Dube allegedly gave other copies to Munjanja, who in turn sold them to Mkoba Teachers’ College students who were sitting for the Mathematics examination. Gumbo and Tamboona, who were among student teachers under Government’s bridging programme for teachers without ‘O’ level Mathematics passes, allegedly bought the papers.

An informant tipped off authorities, leading to Munjanja, Gumbo and Tamboona’s arrest.

The trio then implicated Chimuka, Nkomo and Dube, who were subsequently found in possession of the leaked examination papers.
