Congratulations Caps United after 11 years of trying and failing, Caps United finally won the PSL championship last weekend after they beat Chapungu 1-0 in the last round of action.

SOMETHING beautiful is happening in the Midlands capital, Gweru, our brother from the Reformed Church tells us. The church is winning souls through football, a game the great Pele described as the most beautiful one.

Six teams from Gweru Reformed Church’s centres across the city have formed an exciting league which also features some former Premier Soccer League stars.

According to brother Peter Matangi, the idea of using sport to win souls is paying dividends in that part of the country. “The purpose of this league is to evangelise thousands of souls in Gweru which have not yet received the word of God.

“Most people do not go to church but they find time on Sundays to play football for different purposes. However, we are saying let’s play football but mainly to serve God’s purpose,” wrote Matangi.

The Godfrey Kure coached Woodlands lead the log standings with 19 points from eight games, three ahead of Donga. Senga, Mkoba, Nashville and Gweru complete the six team league.

Former Motor Action player Simbarashe Zimora, Ishmael Mapuwei who had a stint with Chapungu; and Blessing Maburutse who played for former PSL side WhaWha, were some of the prominent actors at the Catholic Fireworks at Epworth.

Six parishes namely St Alois, St Agnes (both from Chitungwiza), St Josephs of Hatfield, Carmalite Brothers (Chisipite), St Pius (Manyame) and hosts St Patrick’s converged in Epworth to compete in different sporting activities a fortnight ago.

St Patrick’s won gold in both women’s football and tug of war while St Pius of Manyame were the volleyball champions. St Agnes won the netball trophy.

St Patrick’s also dominated is men’s soccer where they beat Chisipite 1-0 in a pulsating final. Chisipite got their consolation in individual awards when goal poacher Dominic Zambuko won the top goal scorer award with five goals while keeper Prosper Mutsvairo was voted the best. “This tournament is held annually and is graced by various dignitaries.

‘‘Hats off to the organisers of the tournament and Father Owen Kudumba who gave us the green light to host the tourney,” said Mr Daniel Piyasi of St Patrick’s parish.

It wasn’t surprising to hear Makepekepe coach Lloyd Chitembwe heaping all the praise on the Almighty as he revelled in his moment. Chitembwe rarely misses church on Saturdays and in his finest hour, he never forgot God.

“Glory be to God, without Him this wouldn’t be possible,” Chitembwe said.
