Police in Harare have arrested 763 people who include illegal foreign currency dealers, unlicensed commuter omnibus drivers and unlawful vendors have been arrested in an ongoing operation code-named Peace Deployment Campaign.

Speaking to The Sunday Mail, Harare Province acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova said the exercise was meant to create peace in the capital city.

“The ZRP theme for the year is ‘ZRP Policing for Peace, Economic Recovery and Prosperity in the Second Republic’,” he said.

“People are peaceful when they feel safe and police officers are there to maintain law and order.

“Criminal activities encourage havoc (and) that is why we have decided to begin this campaign because usually when a person sees a police officer, they are less likely to commit a crime than when they are alone. In that regard, 763 (people who include) illegal foreign currency dealers, people driving commuter omnibuses without licences and illegal vendors have been arrested since the start of the operation last week (a fortnight ago).”

Police officers have, since the campaign, been visible on patrol in the Central Business District and residential areas.
