Our dressing at times makes others sin

I wish I had money.

Not much, but just enough to buy shades or blinds so that I do not see evil in its rightful colours.

Gentle reader, whenever temperatures rise, they seem to drive some among us to become frugal in terms of apparel.

Called summer, this time of the year is not for the faint-hearted.

According to experts, weather in the summer grows warmer, and in some areas, the heat translates to drier temperatures.

This hot, dry time of year can lead to droughts, where water is in short supply. Heat waves, times of excessively hot weather that include spikes in temperature, can also occur during the summer.

This largely results in people putting on clothes which are just long enough to cover the essentials and short enough to aerate the body.

It is for this reason that summer time is referred to as “shama time” in street lexicon.

Sadly, these types of clothes are not confined to leisure. They are also being incorporated into formal wear, for the office, where their decency and appropriateness is highly questionable.

This is the time of the year when bending down to pick paper is done at one’s own risk.

It can be worse in public transport.

Some people, especially those of the fairer sex, usually dress in skimpy apparel or body-hugging costumes that make other travellers uncomfortable.

According to our cultural norms and values, women must wear dignified clothes that cover much of their flesh, but all this is thrown out through the window in the name of fashion.

Yours truly this week stumbled upon literature on dressing which he felt compelled to share.

The writer said a Christian must always be dressed modestly (decently).

Whether male or female, Jesus Christ, the writer observed, must be revealed in one’s way of dressing.

“Modest means not extravagant, moderate or restrained in amount, extent, etcetera. Decency means correct, honourable or modest. Decent means conforming to standards of decency, avoiding obscenity, respectable, acceptable or good enough.

“How we dress our bodies is so much important to God because;

  1. The body is God’s temple; it is the dwelling place of God. 1 Corinthians 3:16: Do you know that you are God’s temple and God’s spirit dwells in you?

If the body is God’s temple, His temple must be dressed appropriately to His standards.

  1. To not make your brother or sister sin,”.

When it is only you and God, how you dress does not matter much because even when you are nude taking shower, sleeping naked, married couples being intimate, etc, God is there with you; dwelling in you.

But it is good to cover yourself when you pray and this does not mean that God is with you only when you are praying.

Dressing is about how we reveal/manifest Jesus Christ to people. It is about how we take care of our brothers and sisters not to sin.

Christianity comes from the word ‘Christ-like’ and any person claiming to be a Christian must be Christ-like. Jesus Christ always cared about other people, making sure that they do not sin because of Him.

Unfortunately, some of the clothes put on by people even at church makes people cringe.

Men are also found on this web where they put on so many trousers at once.

This summer period is also associated with drunkenness and we stand to win great dividends in dressing appropriately.

Inotambika mughetto.
