Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Ambassador Frederick Shava says the country is ready to receive its nationals who may fail to have permits to work in South Africa renewed.

South Africa has been considering changing the rules around the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit, a proposal set to reduce the number of citizens legally working in the neighbouring country.

Speaking at the mid-term review of the Binational Commission between Zimbabwe and South Africa in Pretoria yesterday, Minister Shava said Government is committed to working with the neighbouring country to manage growing anxieties and bring finality to the issue.

“The Zimbabwe Exemption Permit will expire at the end of this year. Its expiry is naturally causing much anxiety to the holders of this permit. Our two Governments must work closely in the implementation of this decision. We are ready to receive our nationals back home,” said Minister Shava.

Minister Shava called on Zimbabweans in South Africa to make it easy for the host country to consider lengthening their stay.

“At the same time, I would like to reiterate our appeal to Zimbabweans in South Africa to observe and respect the laws of South Africa. It is a must for each and every Zimbabwean to promote and protect the good image of Zimbabwe wherever they are. We condemn all and any form of criminality on the part of our nationals in South Africa and elsewhere in the world,” said Minister Shava.
