NEW: Youthful entrepreneurs perched on Forbes list

Two young Zimbabwean entrepreneurs made it on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, which recognises emerging entrepreneurs, athletes, artists and influential people on the continent.

This year’s list was heavily influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, which disrupted a number of industries.

But this in no way devalues the achievements of all 30 personalities on the list.

In fact, it can be argued that it actually boosts their value given the impact of the pandemic on business and commerce.

Representing Zimbabwe on the list is the duo of Shackmore Timburwa, the founder of Energy Plus, and Tendai Zhou, who owns VIP Hosting.

We recently sat down with Timburwa to get a better understating of the journey that took him onto the Forbes list.

His is a story of determination and perseverance.

“I have always believed in chasing the vision.

“Chase the vision, not the money,” he quipped.

For someone who ventured into business at 21 with only US$100, and faced a lot of discouragement and losses on the way, it must have been some vision.

“The feeling is very great. I would say this (making the list) has taught me that it works to keep away from people who try to belittle your ambition,’’ he said.

While making it onto the Forbes list is well and good, Timburwa is, however, savouring making it onto the cover of Forbes Magazine.

“This high listing is a deposit of trust, and it comes with great responsibility: Responsibility to be exemplary, work selflessly and to link with my listed cadres from all around our great continent.’’

The 2021 list is a unique listing.

It was particularly looking for those leading the charge of building brands, creating jobs and transforming the continent.

Shackmore first celebrated the news on his social media platforms.

“The darkest nights produce the brightest of the stars.

“I am greatly honoured and humbled to be listed as part of the Forbes family, a home of reputable, esteemed global business and professional doyens around the world,’’ he wrote.

This is what makes Timburwa and Zhou’s stories remarkable, as the recognition celebrates their resourcefulness and resilience in rebuilding and contributing to the African growth story.
