The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has moved the World Cup qualifiers that were set for June to September after considering threats posed by the coronavirus.

The decision was made after consultations with FIFA.

“The CAF Emergency Committee, in consultation with FIFA, have decided to postpone the CAF qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 that were due to be played in June 2021 after taking into consideration the current challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the need to ensure the optimal playing conditions for all participating teams.

“The qualifiers will now take place in the existing windows of September, October and November 2021, and March 2022,” reads a statement by CAF on Thursday.

Postponement of the qualifiers came barely a few hours after Zimbabwe Warriors coach Zdravko Logarušić had announced a 30-man provisional squad for the matches against South Africa and Ethiopia, which had been pencilled in for next month.

The Warriors were set to clash with Bafana Bafana on the weekend of June 5 to June 8, before flying to Addis Ababa for a date against Ethiopia during the weekend of June 11 to June 14.
