IN terms of preparations, UZ Wolves could not have asked for a better tune-up than their impressive run at last month’s Zimbabwe Volleyball League.

The University of Zimbabwe women’s side won the ZVL, and then immediately went in camp as part of their build-up to this week’s 2021 Volleyball Zone Six Championship.

However, the time to put all that hard work and effort in action is now.

The games, previously scheduled for early December, officially begin on Friday and run up to January 16 in Maputo, Mozambique.

And for Wolves’ coach Jonathan Gava, a change of fortunes for the University outfit beckons.

The team was training daily under the bio-bubble concept, and getting tested for Covid-19 regularly before traveling for Maputo on Tuesday.

“We have been in camp for weeks, and only took a break on Christmas, Boxing Day, and on New Year’s day,” said Gava.

“Unlike in the past when we have had short camps, this time it was longer and very smooth running.

“There have not been any huge challenges like before,” he said.

The 14-member squad left for Maputo on Tuesday, alongside 14 male counterparts, who will also be part of the competition.

Harare City men and women, and Black Rhinos are also Zimbabwe’s representatives at the regional tournament.

However, it is Gava who appears to be purring with confidence, with the Wolves coach under the belief that his team is in the right direction both physically and mentally.

“Despite winning the ZVA title, we still felt we were not in good shape and needed to do more.

“This is why we could not afford longer breaks,” said Gava.

“In terms of fitness, we are satisfied.

“Remember we only returned into action towards year-end, and had a few competitive games.

“This is despite other countries having been active for longer.

“There were a lot of positive changes during the camp.

“We had a few psychological sessions to boost our mental aspect, and now feel ready for the challenges that lay ahead,” he said.
