SADC Heads of States and Government are meeting in Maputo, Mozambique, to discuss regional security, integration, cooperation and development.

President Mnangagwa arrived in Maputo on Wednesday morning for the SADC Extraordinary Summit that also coincide with the regional bloc’s 40th anniversary.

He was welcomed at the Maputo International Airport by acting Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Prof Amon Murwira.

Today`s summit was preceded by a high-level meeting attended by ministers from member states.

In a statement, SADC secretariat said: “Summit will, among the key issues, discuss the regional response and support to the Republic of Mozambique in addressing terrorism, regional food and nutrition security, gender and development, and progress in the regional response to HIV and AIDS and Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Summit will review progress made in the implementation of the theme of the 40th SADC Summit; SADC: 40 Years Building Peace and Security, and Promoting Development and Resilience in the Face of Global Challenges, which was endorsed by the SADC Summit in August, 2020.”

Last month’s Extraordinary Double Troika meeting committed to increase solidarity with Mozambique, which is battling an intense insurgency particularly in Cabo Delgado Province.
