GOVERNMENT has fulfilled its commitment to restoring water supply at Mkwasine and Nandi Sugarcane Estates, after intensifying repair works at Manjirenji Dam.

Sugarcane plantations in the two areas had been facing crippling water shortages for weeks after Manjirenji Dam was damaged.

As an interim measure to restore water supply, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) engineers will create bypasses in order to restore movement of water, while major works commence.

“Paperwork is done and now work on the ground will be in full swing before the end of the week.

“We are happy with the progress,” said Zinwa spokesperson, Mrs Marjorie Munyonga.

Zimbabwe Sugarcane Development Association (ZSDA) vice chairperson, Mrs Bernadette Tamba, confirmed the development.

“A call came to inform us that Manjirenji Dam works have started.

“By end day today (Wednesday) equipment will be moved on site to start work,” said Mrs Tamba.

“The works are expected to take a maximum of five days to complete and we are happy and hope all goes well to save our sugarcane.”
