The GOVERNMENT remains committed to developing sports infrastructure across the country through partnerships with local and international companies.

This was said by Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya during the certification ceremony of Geo Pomona Waste Management football pitch by FIFA in Harare on Thursday.

“I am excited to announce that Geo Pomona Waste Management is among the companies that are working and thriving towards achieving the nation’s vision of becoming a prosperous and empowered upper-middle income society,” she said.

“The Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture in collaboration with Geo Pomona has embarked on a mission to utilise the power of sports to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and the need for sustainable waste management practices.”

Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive officer and executive chairman Mr Dilesh Nguwaya said the football field, built alongside two basketball and two tennis pitches, will serve the surrounding communities and professional football clubs.

“Today we have FIFA agent Cemil Nadir Sahin who arrived in Zimbabwe to carry out inspection of this soccer field to certify that it meets international standards.

“These facilities will be open to the public and this will help mainstream sport for the Pomona Community and the rest of Harare.

“We anticipate that this sport arm of the recreational facility will serve as a talent incubation centre for our youth and will go a long way in supporting Zimbabwe’s anti-drug and substance abuse fight.”

Cemil Nadir Sahin said he was impressed with the quality of sports facilities at Geo Pomona.

“We are happy to be here and I can say Geo Pomona has really good facilities,” he said.

“We did a test and they matched FIFA quality and I hope Mr Dilesh will keep on maintaining them in good condition because they are helping the community a lot.”
