NEW: FIFA monitoring Zimbabwe football situation

The Sunday Mail

World football governing body, FIFA, is closely monitoring developments in local football, after the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) moved to dissolve the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board earlier this week.

The SRC suspended the ZIFA board on Tuesday, citing gross abuse of Government funds as one of the major charges.

Both the SRC and ZIFA have since communicated to FIFA, who are yet to intervene.

Responding to questions by The Sunday Mail Sport, FIFA’s media office said:

“FIFA is closely monitoring this matter. Please understand we cannot comment further at this stage.”

The SRC is on the verge of appointing a normalisation committee, in consultation with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.

FIFA’s intervention is now eagerly awaited.

The world governing body could either support SRC’s move or ban Zimbabwe from international football because of undue interference from a third party.
