UPCOMING female reggae artist Metalic has vowed to end the music genre’s domination by her male counterparts.

Born Anna Simbi, Metalic insists she has what it takes to compete favourably with male artists.

“When I chose to become a reggae artist, I knew very well that this genre is mostly dominated by men. We have the likes of Nutty O, Poptain and Tocky Vibes, among other established reggae artistes.

“I will hold my own and compete favourably against them,” she said.

Metalic drew the nation’s attention when she released her debut single, ‘Hottest Girl’, in 2021.

The song went viral on social media platforms and performed exceptionally well on local music charts.

‘Hottest Girl’ grabbed the number 13 spot on the 2021 Power FM Top 40 Countdown.

The song wowed renowned Jamaican music producer DJ Treasure, who went on to do a mix-tape for the song.

DJ Treasure then did a collaboration with the rising reggae artist.

The duo worked together on the songs ‘Gifted’, ‘Independent Girl’ and ‘African Dolly’.

Metalic has so far released 11 songs, among them ‘Good Feeling’ and ‘Weaves and Heels’.

Her latest release, ‘Level’ is receiving generous airplay on Power FM.

Following her exposure to the Jamaican audience, she is confident she will one day break onto the international reggae scene.

“Working with DJ Treasure was an eye-opener. It gave me the confidence to work towards becoming an international reggae artiste. I will one day make it to the top and lift my country’s flag high.”

Metalic said players in the music sector should avail to female reggae artists the same opportunities that are given to their male counterparts.

“It appears as if there is an unwritten rule which states that reggae music is for men. Female reggae artists must also be given the same opportunities as those that are given to men.

“As female reggae artists, we are good, if not better, than our male counterparts.”
