ZIMBABWE will tomorrow join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, amid calls for the intensification of awareness campaigns targeting issues to do with the ozone layer.

Each year, September 16 is set aside to mark the day when the Montreal Protocol was agreed upon and adopted.

The Montreal Protocol is a global agreement that seeks to protect the ozone layer.

This year the commemorations are running under the theme: “Montreal Protocol – keeping us, our food and vaccines cool.”

One of the most successful environmental agreements to date, the Montreal Protocol is a unified global effort whose aim is to phase out ozone-depleting substances.

Mr George Chaumba, the Ozone Project manager in the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry said issues to do with the ozone layer are often misunderstood.

“There is need for continued sensitisation of issues to do with the ozone layer. We will use the World Ozone Day to educate and remind Zimbabweans about issues surrounding the ozone layer,” Mr Chaumba said.

The ozone layer is a thin part of the Earth’s atmosphere that absorbs almost all of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet light.
