MORE than 400 households in Glen View, Harare, will soon start benefitting from a rent-a-roof solar project pilot scheme, which will see solar panels being installed on roof tops, with the power set to be fed into the national grid.

The scheme, which is being rolled out by the Zimbabwe Solar Energy Company (ZISEC), a subsidiary of Prevail Group International (PGI), was officially launched in Glen View on Tuesday.

Speaking at the launch, PGI chairperson Mr Paul Tungwarara said the novel scheme was envisaged to significantly reduce load-shedding in the next few years.

“We have launched this pilot scheme in Glen View and initially, about 400 homes owners are expected to benefit. There are several advantages to being part of this scheme. Firstly, when you rent your roof, you will be paid a rental fee,” he said.

“Secondly, we will install the solar panels on your roofs and the inverters for free. There will be no load-shedding for beneficiaries. The power that we will generate from the panels will then be fed into the national grid.”

Mr Tungwarara said after Glen View, the scheme is expected to be unveiled in other parts of the country, with the ultimate aim of eradicating load-shedding.

“We have started with Glen View, just as a pilot scheme. We envisage that this initiative will grow into a national project,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Zanu PF deputy secretary for security in the Politburo Cde Tendai Chirau said: “I am proud that this is a programme that speaks to President Mnangagwa’s vision to provide development and better the lives of citizens.

“This is in line with his thrust to leave no one and no place behind. I want to laud Mr Tungwarara for living up to the President’s mantra ‘Nyika ino vakwa ne vene vayo’ (a country is developed by its people).”
