THE Methodist Church in Zimbabwe has launched a food aid programme with donations of grain, cooking oil and beans in Gokwe recently. The church launched the Methodist Development and Relief Agency (MeDRA) 2016 to 2020 Strategic Plan in Gokwe.The aid programme, which is in line with Zim-Asset and the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals, is aimed at fighting food shortages in the face of recurring droughts. MeDRA donated 2 700kg of maize, 270kg of beans and 324 litres of cooking oil to the Siabuwa community of Gokwe.
Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, Reverend Salmon Zwane, said: “We persevere to preach the gospel and to also make sure that people have enough food. We are just stewards of God’s possessions and we will use them as He wants.”
Bishop Zwane praised the church’s partners for showing great love.
The Methodist Church is also helping communities in Gokwe to rear chickens, pigs and fish.
MeDRA’s projects officer Mrs Junior Vutoyi said, “We are happy that we are able to empower the people to nurture their talents for their benefit.” MeDRA director Mr Clever Tabaziba chipped in: “Healing comes in different forms and sometimes we don’t have to lay hands on the sick for them to be healed.”
One of the project beneficiaries, a Mrs Sibanda, thanked the church.
“I am glad because the project has given my husband something to keep him busy rather than just eating and sleeping,” she said.
