ORLANDO Munashe Mukwekwe, a Form Five learner at Munashe Private High School, won the right to represent Mutoko South in the Junior Parliament following elections conducted a fortnight ago.
The polls took place at Mutoko Central High School.
Educational institutions drawn from the district — among them Mutoko Government High School, Mutoko High School, Bondamakara Secondary School, Chawira High School and All Souls Mission — participated in the elections.
Each of the seven schools brought at least three representatives.
Mukwekwe, affectionately known as the gentle giant, managed to make it to the top, after a rigorous interview presided over by Ms Martha Bota, who is programmes officer in the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.
It was a nerve-wrecking moment, but Mukwekwe managed to hold his own.
Learners endured anxiety and stage fright while others seemed to be at ease as evidenced by their eloquence and confidence.
The results were announced instantly, much to the jubilation of their supporters.
With a new post, a new achievement, the journey to the world of politics has just begun.
Mukwekwe could not hide his joy upon landing the post of junior MP.
He has already unveiled his action plan, which includes advocating children’s rights.
He expects to hit the ground running by embarking on a tour of the constituency, meeting learners to get first-hand information about issues affecting them.
Some schools, especially those in remote areas, are in dire need of items like sanitary pads.
The newly elected junior Member of Parliament has pledged to improve the situation and work hard for the constituency.
