Last week’s story of a former street vendor who is now a proud sponsor of a Division Three football team generated a lot of interest among our valued readers.Tichaona Tashaya, the sponsor of FC Mbare National, wrote to The Sunday Mail Religion revealing that he got massive inquiries from people who wanted to find out how the Lord had changed his life.

“People from everywhere congratulated us, praise God. I didn’t realise your column had such a huge following,” wrote Tashaya, who is now based in the United Kingdom.

Raphael Maraire of AFM Budiriro East (Charismata) in Budiriro 3 is also an avid follower of this column but his worry is that their football team is lacking competition from that part of Harare.

He has challenged those churches with vibrant teams to book a date with AFM Budiriro East.

“I read your column about sport and religion, it is very interesting. My church is AFM Budiriro East (Charismata) in Harare and we are looking for strong teams to play,” wrote Maraire.

Those willing to take up this challenge can get in touch with the columnist on the contacts provided at the end of this instalment.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army’s Harare West section held its Annual Youth Summer Camp at Masiye Camp in Bulawayo from September 1-4.

Salvation Army youths partook in various sporting and team building activities which included canoeing, mountain climbing and water fighting.

“Never Give Up” was the main message that Captain Raymond Chiyepa reiterated to the youths during the devotions.

The youths were taken through great all-round body work physical fitness to prepare them for life’s challenges.

According to Paul Kandeya, a member of the Salvation Army 125 year celebrations media team, Youth Summer Camps help the young people to attend to their spiritual, social, physical, psychological and emotional needs in a different environment.

“The older you grow, the more the challenges you face but be a persistent David in the face of discouragement, stand up and be firm in prayer,” was the bold message.

This weekend is a special one for the Anglican Diocese League as the winners of the two regions will be known by end of day today.

It’s Week 20 and Glen View are three points clear of All Saints in the Region A league while Glen Norah are just a point ahead of Greendale in Region B.

Mbare were suspended for indiscipline in Region A where Ruwa and Mabvuku are languishing at the bottom end of the log standings.

Hatfield and Avondale are also struggling to cope with the competition in Region A.

The top four teams from the two leagues will qualify for the Super 8 Cup whose dates are still to be advised.

“We are entering Week 20 with only one round left. May you please note that Mbare has been suspended due to disciplinary issues and will not play their games until the Disciplinary Committee has resolved their case,” said Tawanda Mutemererwa, secretary general of the Anglican Diocese League.

St Paul’s Marlborough were the biggest winners last weekend as they walloped St Mary’s Highlands 6-1.

St Luke’s Greendale who are now all set for the Super 8 tournament, beat struggling St Dorcas’ Ruwa 3-0 in Ruwa.

Next week, we will focus on a former international boxing champion whose life was full of controversy until he saw the light through the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the same vein, we also invite renowned sporting personalities who have given their life to Jesus Christ to contact us and give us their testimonies.
