FORTY most influential young leaders under the age of 40, among them Government officials, were honoured by the Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe (ICDZ), a non-profit organisation, last week.

The awards recognise young and outstanding leaders in different fields.

Among those that received honours were Minister of Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry, Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Vangelis Haritatos, and Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere.

Minister Coventry’s deputy Tinotenda Machakaire, Ministry of Lands Permanent Secretary Dr John Basera and Zimbabwe National Road Administration board chairperson Dr George Manyaya made the list.

Ms Elizabeth Tanya Masiyiwa, daughter to Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa, and The Sunday Mail columnist Ms Rutendo Gwatidzo were also honoured.

ICDZ membership and events manager Ms Joyce Chireka said the awards recognise outstanding young leaders who contribute to the growth of the economy.

“The awards recognise and appreciate young business leaders in Zimbabwe who personify outstanding qualities and achievements in leadership, adhere to high ethical standards while making contributions to the growth of the economy,” she said.

“We call for nominations from their peers. Submissions are done and the due diligence process is done by the adjudication committee.”

According to ICDZ, the list was released following a due diligence exercise.

“The process began by posting adverts calling for nominations.

“The public had the opportunity to nominate individuals who are 40 years and under who are influential in the selected categories,” said ICDZ in a statement.

“Upon receipt of the nominations, a list of more than 200 individuals was compiled and a due diligence exercise was conducted to verify the nominees.”

After the nominees were informed, the list was submitted to the adjudication committee.

“The criteria focused on the Covid-19 period, assessing activities, achievements and innovations made by the nominees and their impact on the business world and their communities.”

Once the adjudicators had cut the list down to 40, said IDCZ, they returned the list to the institute.

Energy Plus Group International chief executive officer Mr Shacky Timburwa and Picco Construction founder Dr Rinos Mautsa were also recognised.
