How Man Utd chiefs were ‘pushed’ into wrapping up deal to take Ten Hag to Old Trafford

Manchester United were forced to wrap up negotiations with Erik ten Hag as RB Leipzig became an increasing threat, according to reports.

The Red Devils have announced that the Dutchman will arrive at Old Trafford this summer from Ajax after a lengthy managerial search. Ten Hag emerged as an early favourite alongside Mauricio Pochettino at PSG, who has previously been linked with the role.

Speculation has rumbled on for months regarding a potential move for Ten Hag and the club had to act quick when it emerged that Leipzig were looking to lure the 52-year-old to Germany. The Bundesliga outfit tabled an offer and Ten Hag’s agent applied pressure on United as they sought an answer.

He made the Red Devils aware that Ten Hag favoured a move to them over Leipzig, but they needed to press on with finalising the deal, reports the MEN. United have been heavily criticised for their decision making – both on and off the pitch – for several years.

They find themselves battling to make the top four and Ten Hag could yet be preparing for his first season without Champions League football. Old Trafford chiefs were impressed by the Dutchman’s plans for the club as they seek to end a lengthy trophy drought.

John Murtough, Football Director, who was among those who played a key role in the managerial search and interviewed Ten Hag, said: “During the past four years at Ajax, Erik has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his team’s attractive, attacking football and commitment to youth. In our conversations with Erik leading up to this appointment.

“We were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Manchester United to the level we want to be competing at, and his drive and determination to achieve that. We wish Erik the best of luck as he focuses on achieving a successful end to the season at Ajax and look forward to welcoming him to Manchester United this summer.”

Ten Hag himself said: “It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead. I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve.

“It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.” – Mirror
