Harare province exerted their dominance over the entire country as both their male and female teams emerged victorious, at the recently held Inter-Provincial Hockey Tournament held at St John’s College.

Both the Harare men and women’s teams were crowned champions of the annual tournament, which was played in a round-robin format and saw the latter finish unbeaten.

Harare men peeped Masvingo to the title, with a superior goal difference, after both teams won two games each, before playing to a one-all draw in the final match of the tournament.

They cruised to a 3-1 victory over Matabeleland before beating a second-string Harare B side 4-0, and wrapping up proceedings with the draw against Masvingo.

Masvingo beat the second string Harare side (4-0) and edged out Matabeleland by a goal to nil.

In the women’s category, Harare’s Province senior team recorded massive victories on their way to finishing the tournament unbeaten.

They cruised to a 6-1 victory over Harare C before thrashing Harare B (5-1) and wrapping it up with a four-nil win over bitter rivals Masvingo.

Masvingo’s Arnold Mpofu was crowned the Player of the Tournament and Top Goal-scorer for the men’s category.

He scored four goals during the entire tournament.

In the women’s category it was Harare A’s Alexie Terblanche who walked away with both the Player of the Tournament and Top Goal-scorer (six) accolades.

The tournament was used to select both the national men’s and women’s teams.

Zimbabwe will host the Central and Southern Africa 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, slated for August 21-30.

Sadly, the tournament was the last bit of hockey action for a while after the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe suspended the ongoing league action, as part of heeding the call by Government to postpone all sporting activities in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
