DECEMBER 24, 2016 will forever linger in the mind of 71 year-old Sekuru Seliwe Chuma of Mashayamvura area in Zhombe. For an ailing Sekuru Chuma, Christmas eve started just like any other day, little did he know that God had sent his Angels.

For several years Sekuru Chuma had been yearning to visit the hospital but he among other factors could not afford to foot the medical bills.

The visibly-aged Sekuru Chuma was awakened earlier than usual on the 24th by a team of medical practitioners who requested to bath him before applying some treatment. At first Sekuru Chuma could not understand what was going on.

Medical practitioners from a Harare-based church; Remnant Ministries had travelled to Zhombe to provide free medical check-up and treatment while they donated food stuffs in Gokwe.

“This year has ended well and I hope next year, things will be better. This Christmas is great for me. I was thinking that they are just coming here to offer a prayer and give me cooking oil, beans and maize like other donors. But what these men and women of God are doing is amazing,” said Sekuru Chuma.

He had swollen legs which had caused him sleepless nights for years.

In addition to providing medical care, Remnant Ministries conducted a church service, before launching a community poultry project.

Dr Innocent Sibanda, founder of Remnant Ministries said, “We started mobilising this money in December 2015 and our partners who are all over the world supported us. We had a number of fundraising initiatives that include Pie-in-the-Face Auction, which alone raised more than $6,000, a wing eating contest, a women’s spa day event, Christmas card photo fund raiser and selling branded church attires among other activities.”

Ms Tapiwa Mazodza one of the initiative organisers said they were aiming to reach out more areas to assist the disadvantaged next year.

“We have raised US$20 000 and next year we would want to make it US$50 000. We are optimistic that through the grace of God we will achieve our target. This programme is now on our calendar and its now an annual event. We have not yet chosen our next destination but we will make sure that each and every part of the country is covered,” she said.

Headman Richard Mkwananzi commended Remnant Ministries for remembering the less privileged.

“What you have given us today will be exhausted one day but the love you have shown us will live forever,” he said.
