THE Sunday Mail senior reporter, Leroy Dzenga, last Thursday scooped the Best Water and Sanitation Award at the 23rd edition of the Environmental Reporter Awards.

The awards were hosted by Environment Africa and the Rainbow Tourism Group.

The winning entry, which was a feature story titled, ‘Is Zimbabwe drilling itself dry?’ focused on the sustainability of the borehole drilling activity taking place around the country. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Dzenga thanked The Sunday Mail Editor, Victoria Ruzvidzo, for prioritising environmental stories.

“The news cycle has many competing stories, which are of importance. I want to thank my editors for giving space to environmental stories.

There are some publications that do not attach importance to them, but that is not the case at The Sunday Mail,” said Dzenga.

Zimpapers was the dominant media house at the awards, with three awards out of eight categories.

The Chronicle’s Michael Magoronga won the Best Wildlife Conservation Story Award, while Patrick Chitumba from the same publication walked away with the Best Gender and Environment Award.
