DRUG and substance abuse is creating problems in schools.
Last month, two students from a local school had to be checked into a rehabilitation centre after being found in possession of drugs.
According to a local guidance and counselling teacher, “drugs have negatively impacted on learners”.
Some of the students say they are abusing drugs due to stress, abuse by parents or guardians, peer pressure, the desire to experiment, the need to get high, the desire for sporting prowess and pressure from schoolwork.
One of the learners said, “The drugs that are being abused more include crystal meth (dombo), marijuana and Broncleer.
“They are being supplied by drug dealers operating on the streets and areas around schools, both primary and secondary schools.
“The sad part is that very little is being done to deal with the drug dealers.”
It is generally believed that more needs to be done to protect learners from drug and substance abuse at school and home.
Some of the effects of drug abuse are loss of concentration, hallucination, aggression and memory loss.
