The Rwandan government will this month offer employment contracts to 224 Zimbabwean teachers who successfully completed oral and written interviews for job placements in the Central African country.

Harare and Kigali last year agreed to facilitate the recruitment by Rwanda of 477 Zimbabwean teachers.

Last month, 401 teachers sat for the job interviews, with 224 making the final cut.

In an interview, the director of labour and administration in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Langton Ngorima, said successful candidates are set to formally receive job offers.

“The interviews ended on August 26 at all five centres selected for the process.

“Candidates who expressed interest in working at polytechnics and health science colleges were exempted from the written interviews and only participated in the online oral interviews,” said Mr Ngorima.

Permanent Secretary in the Rwandan Ministry of Education Mr Charles Karakye, who led a delegation to supervise the interviews, said the teachers will be offered “attractive” packages.

Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Professor Paul Mavima added that the expatriate teachers will be treated fairly in Rwanda.

“The Government of Zimbabwe is going to insist on minimum conditions of service at the bi-national level.

“So, this is a better arrangement than the one where a teacher goes out on their own to seek employment,” said Professor Mavima.

Labour migration, he said, was an important element to the Second Republic’s development thrust.

“We are ensuring that they will get conditions that will be worthwhile for them and worthwhile for the country. So, there is no possibility of manipulation, especially where we have structured something like this,” added Prof Mavima.

“Manipulation only comes where there is no government involvement, when someone just leaves and goes to a destination without involving the government.”
