JOHANNESBURG-based Anglo Platinum Mines (Amplats) reported Monday that net sales at its wholly owned Zimbabwean unit, Unki, rose to R2,1 billion ( about US$210 million) in the year ended December 31 2014 from R1,64 billion (US$164 million) a year earlier.
Refined platinum production at the mine, which is located in the southern part of the mineral-rich Great Dyke, slumped to 60 300 ounces from 67 000 ounces in 2013.
Unki employs more than 1 083 workers.
An additional 163 workers are contract employers.
Local platinum mines are fretting over the introduction of a 15 percent tax on unrefined platinum exports.
Reuters also reported Monday that Amplats chief executive Mr Chris Griffith said the new tax, introduced January 1, will cost the miner about US$10 million a year.
Mimosa Platinum Mine, a joint venture business between Johannesburg Stock Exchange Listed-Aquarius and Implats, is also equally concerned that the levy will put a dent on its revenues.
Aquarius releases its interim financials tomorrow.
Government is determined to ensure that platinum producers – Unki, Zimplats and Mimosa – put up establish local refining capacity of the white metal.
