THE Sunday Mail Health and Gender Reporter Shamiso Yikoniko won the Nutrition and Wellness Reporter of the Year, and Health Reporter of the Year at the 2016-2017 National Journalistic and Media Awards in Harare last week.

The ceremony was even more special for Yikoniko as with her as she scooped the two awards was her tot, Maqoba Mabhena, who just a year ago was at the centre of a national campaign to help her undergo life-saving surgery in India.

Said Yikoniko after accepting the dual honours: “I want to thank God for the awards as well as The Sunday Mail editorial team for believing in me.”

A holder of an English and Communications degree from Midlands State University, Yikoniko won the National Arts Merit Award (Print Media) in 2013 and has also bagged the Anti-Microbial Resistance Reporting Award (Print Media).

Other Zimpapers journalists who won awards at Njama last week were The Herald Arts Editor Godwin Muzari, Sunday News Reporter Vusimuzi Dube and Sunday News Senior Reporter Robin Muchetu.

At the awards ceremony, United Nations Resident Co-ordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli urged journalists to play a role in nation-building.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists awards were this year held under the theme “Media for Sustainable Development”.
