Koontz back with another Jane Hawk novel

The Sunday Mail

EARLIER this year, bestselling author Dean Koontz introduced the world to Jane Hawk, a heroin who is the lead character in his novel, “The Silent Corner”, that was released in June.

It has only taken a few months for the writer to return with yet another thrilling sequel, “The Whispering Room” which was published last month.

The exciting former FBI agent is still hot on the heels of the stirring conspiracy making up the first book where people are being technologically brainwashed and instructed to act in a certain way.

One of the victims is a teacher who subconsciously drives a car bomb into a hotel, killing several people in the process.

Just like in the first installment, Hawk is still the same enterprising and sleek operator who displays exceptional evasive skills as she tries to stay a step ahead of her enemies.

On a mission to expose a plot by an organisation that intends to eliminate certain individuals in society by using nanomachine control mechanisms, she has to walk around in disguise.

Every move she makes is well calculated so that she does not get caught in a net that is being set by all the top security agencies on the lookout for her.

“Among other things, the large tote bag contained a long blond wig.

She fitted it to her head, secured it, brushed it, and used a blue Scünci to hold it in a ponytail. She pulled on a baseball cap that wasn’t emblazoned with any logo or slogan.

“In jeans, a sweater, and a sport coat cut to conceal the shoulder rig and pistol, she looked anonymous, except that during the past few days, the news media had ensured that her face was nearly as familiar to the public as that of any TV star,” reads an excerpt from the book.

One thing I liked about Hawk’s character is the fact that she is capable of defending herself, which gives me a sense of anticipation every time a sign of danger signals her way.

“In the past week, on leave from the Bureau, she’d killed three men in self-defence. She was now a rogue agent, and she’d had enough of killing.”

This is a great book for people who like sci-fi stories and conspiracy theories.

While this storyline is a bit below the first installment, I still enjoyed it.

I definitely will not hesitate buying the next edition of the series if the writer brings back Jane Hawk.
