WHAT do you do when you suffer a career threatening injury?

Well, write a book.

That is how Old Georgians scrumhalf Graham Kaulback utilised the years he watched rugby from the sidelines after breaking his leg during a Cheetahs training camp in 2013.

Kaulback describes the memoir writing exercise as therapeutic.

“Memoirs of African Upbringing is a collection of memoirs I wrote as part of my recovery process . It was soothing, almost therapeutic as it fully engaged my mind.

“It was invigorating and more of a reflection, bringing to perspective where I was and where I wanted to go and one day I would like to finish it and get it published,” said Kaulback.

After the long layoff, the former Sables man is also fully appreciative of what it means to be playing rugby again and intends to make the most of his second coming.

“Being able to play again is an immense privilege which I am grateful for. Rugby is a cornerstone of my life, it plays a major part in my life,” he said.

“I have been focusing more on the enjoyment and core values that our wonderful game offers and split my focus between playing for Old Georgians and advancing my coaching career.

“I never contemplated quitting but instead my focus was on the day I was to play again.”

Son to former Sables winger Pete, Kaulback believes rugby runs in his family’s blood.

“It’s definitely a family thing and I’m hugely proud of my dad, scoring tries against both France and Scotland in the 1987 World Cup.

“My dad actually handed me down his Sables blazer to wear when I earned my first Sables cap, the blazer has not changed and hopefully I can pass it on to the next generation,” said the 27-year-old scrumhalf who is expected to lead Old Georgians at next month’s Dubai Sevens tournament.
