EDITORIAL COMMENT: Beware who you let into your house!

Zanu-PF, and by extension Zimbabwe, has a serious problem.

Ruling party officials, we have good cause to believe, are playing fast and loose with American spies, and are doing it for money.

Of course, all the characters involved will deny they are recipients of a few thousand dollars here and there in exchange for whatever information they are feeding the Americans.

But there is no smoke without a fire. And in the unravelling saga what we are seeing is a raging inferno.

Trying to blame their exposure on Zanu-PF factionalism is the lamest of excuses, and only serves to make the implicated parties look even guiltier of compromising their principles and their principal in the person of President Mugabe, who has endured much at the hands of these very same Americans who have invested heavily in destroying what he stands for.

It should trouble any right-thinking Zimbabwean when Zanu-PF officials, some of them very senior, take American spies right down to the grassroots, to our villages and headmen.

What kind of money have they been promised for them to think they can sup with the devil at such close quarters? Do they have any conception of the magnitude of their actions and the implications this has on the fabric of our sovereignty and security as an independent nation?

And that such activities should involve officials from a party like Zanu-PF leaves any fair-minded observer closer to the conclusion that this is nothing short of treasonous behaviour.

Before the implicated officials scream “conspiracy” or “factionalism”, they should consider the import of their actions.

No one cares which faction such people belong to, no one cares who exposes them, no one cares what the motives of those who expose them are: the bottom line is that this is totally unacceptable treasonous behaviour that no country worth its salt would ever tolerate.

Do they think American politicians will ever take CIO operatives and Zimbabwean Washington Embassy officials to the rural Mid-West of the United States and bare all to them just because they would have waved a few wads of money?

These American spies who Zanu-PF officials are playing footloose and fancy-free with are not interested in what is best for these myopic politicians, nor what is best for Zimbabwe at large.

They have their own interests and they will use any sucker who gets a blood-rush and is titillated by the sight of a few dirty dollars to further their own interests.

That Zanu-PF officials think they can take American spies to the rural strongholds they love to brag about shows an alarming level of infiltration and ideological degeneration that needs to be effectively nipped.

We are exposing ourselves as a nation and we should not shy from speaking out clearly and boldly to anyone involved that we do not care who you are and we will not be intimidated by your position when it comes to protecting and promoting issues that are in our national interest.

Several of them will respond in typical bellicose manner; and some of them will play the victim, even mouthing feeble non-defences like “Mwari anoziva (God knows the truth).”

Well, there is an instructive lesson from the Bible for those who want to play the “God-knows-the-truth” card.

There is an interesting story of a king called Hezekiah who on receiving envoys from Brodach Baladan, King of Babylonia, took them all over his kingdom and showed them all his wealth and exposed the state of his nation to the enemy.

The story ends with the Prophet Isaiah telling King Hezekiah that because of his foolish exposure, the Babylonians would soon come and conquer Israel. Which they did.

There is no need to explain what this story means!
