The Zimbabwe Republic Police has assured those who qualify for VIP security, such as sitting ministers and selected persons including diplomats, of maximum protection to help them discharge their duties.

The Officer Commanding the Police Protection Unit, Senior Assistant Commissioner Lee Muchemwa said this in Harare last week at a PPU Client Service Charter Reinvigoration event.

Snr Asst Comm Muchemwa said, “The re-invigoration of this programme is an eloquent testimony of the commitment by the PPU to enhance the safety and security of the country’s top leadership and the diplomatic community who are our clients.

“The Police Protection Unit is mandated to provide security to VVIPs and VIPs which is the top leadership of the country, the Presidium, ministers, judges of the Supreme and High Court of Zimbabwe, the diplomatic community and any other VIPs as declared by the Government of Zimbabwe.

“The duty calls for total dedication, total commitment and total vigilance at all times as we work towards preventing and detecting any forms of crimes against our clients.

“As a police province, we endeavour to commit ourselves to ensuring that, we have a zero tolerance to the occurrence of any criminality incidents at all guarded points.”

At the same event, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and DRC Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Mwanananga Mawampanga, hailed the PPU.

“As the diplomatic community, we feel very safe to discharge our duties as the security forces of Zimbabwe are capable,” he said. “I have been in Zimbabwe for 10 years and I sleep peacefully because I know my security is guaranteed.

“As the diplomatic community we are going to make sure that the officers guarding our premises are provided with conducive working environment. If you have any queries regarding any embassy here in Zimbabwe, don’t go direct to that embassy, you should come to me and I know proper channels to follow.”

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations requires host governments to provide security services to every diplomatic mission and staff working in their countries.
