Cocaine smuggler nabbed

The Sunday Mail

A 39-year-old woman was arrested at the Harare International Airport on February 3 while attempting to smuggle 274g of cocaine worth US$22 000 into Zimbabwe.

Her boss — a known drug dealer based in Harare — is now on the run.

Fungisai Maguta of Waterfalls, Harare was apprehended by ZRP Drugs and Narcotics officers when she arrived from Brazil, the source of the contraband.

She appeared in court last week and her matter will resume on February 16.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba told The Sunday Mail, “The accused travelled to Brazil towards the end of January and stayed at a hotel in Sao Paolo for five days. Someone gave her at least 274g of cocaine worth about US$21 920, and she was told to deliver the drugs to a drug dealer who is on the run as we speak.

“Alert Drugs and Narcotics Unit officers apprehended her as soon as she arrived at the Harare International Airport. Tests confirmed that the substance she had was cocaine.”

Snr Asst Comm Charamba warned Zimbabweans against trafficking drugs.

Two years ago, a 32-year-old Zimbabwean student, Elder Ruzive, was arrested at India’s Thiruvananthapuram Airport after she was found with 25kg of ephedrine drugs worth US$1,7 million.

Lydia Ndari-Murwira (43) was also arrested at New Delhi International Airport while in possession of 9,9kg of ephedrine hydrochloride — a catalyst used to produce dangerous drugs like cocaine and heroine.
