THE African Development Bank (AfDB) 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM), which began yesterday and will run until Friday, is currently underway in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

The AGM – running under the theme “Africa and the new global landscape” – will focus on Africa’s economic concerns such as trade and regional integration, infrastructure, private sector development, job creation and governance.

Members will also have the opportunity to reflect on the AfDB’s 50-year contribution to the development of Africa.

Finance ministers and central bank governors from the bank’s 54 member countries and representatives from 26 non-regional member countries are in attendance.

Traditionally, the AGM attracts delegates from multilateral finance institutions, development agencies, the private sector, non-governmental organisations and civic society.

A new AfDB president is expected to be elected at the AGM.

Zimbabwe’s Dr Thomas Zondo Sakhala is one of the eight candidates vying for the AfDB presidency, replacing Dr Donald Kaberuka of Rwanda.

If elected, Zimbabwe will be at its most powerful, diplomatically, controlling most levers of continental power, after President Mugabe was elected chair of the African Union (AU).

He also leads the regional block, SADC.
