ZIMPOST, born out of the restructuring of the Posts and Telecommunicatons Corporation in 2000, has extended the reach of its mobile money service, Zipcash, to Lesotho.
Zipcash sits on the International Financial System electronic platform developed by the Universal Postal Union.
It is also made possible through a postal network that Zimpost shares with other countries, especially in the Sadc region.
The system has the capacity to connect to over 600 000 post offfices worldwide, subject to bilateral arrangements between countries.
Already, Zimpost money transfers covers countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania.
“We have extended the mobile money transfer to Lesotho as many Zimbabweans are spread out in the different Sadc countries thus we want to make it easy for them to send money to their families and loved ones,” said Dr Douglas Zimbango, Zimpost’s MD.
The State-owned enterprise is in talks to expand the service to other countries in the region and beyond.
“Countries that might be coming on board include the United Arab Emirates, Uganda and Malawi, these are the countries that we are currently negotiating with,” added Dr Zimbango.
Zipcash money transfer was launched in December 2013.
Unlike other money transfer services, Zipcash does not require the sender or recipient to have a bank account or to first register, and there are no charges for recipients. Local Zipcash money transfer service enables customers to send or receive money throughout Zimbabwe.
Zimpost, which has a network of over 225 outlets nationwide – also covering the most remote parts of the country – seeks to leverage on this infrastructure to gain a greater market share.
