TEN journalists from the country’s largest integrated media house, Zimpapers, walked away with 14 honours at the 2021-2022 National Journalism Media Awards (NJAMA). The huge win asserts Zimpapers’ continued dominance of the local media landscape.

The Sunday Mail’s Veronica Gwaze was among the winners, after coming second in the Agriculture Journalist of the Year category.

Gwaze’s entry was an article on the proliferation of backyard butcheries in high-density suburbs, which are posing a huge risk to public health.

“It is an honour to win an award of this magnitude,” said Gwaze.

“This means I am going in the right direction. It is a huge motivation to keep pushing.

“This recognition is a huge motivation that gives me renewed energy.

“Much credit goes to The Sunday Mail team, who have become family and are there to guide and teach me every day.

“Many thanks to my editors, whose mentorship has led me here.”

Zimpapers Television Network’s Sharon Munjenjema was runner-up in the Human Rights Journalist of the Year category. Takudzwa Chihambakwe, also from the fledgling television station, won the Farming and Conservation Journalist of the Year award, while Enacy Makapame of The Herald was runner-up in the same category.

The Herald’s Ivan Zhakata came second in the Yasser Arafat Journalist of the Year category, while Memory Mangombe of Kwayedza was also runner-up in the Multi-Media Journalist of the Year category.

Gibson Mhaka from The Chronicle was runner-up in two categories — the ICT Journalist of the Year and the Gender-based Violence Journalist of the Year categories.

His colleagues at our Bulawayo Bureau, Thandeka Moyo and Mkhululi Ncube, won the Maternal Health Journalist of the Year and the Agriculture Journalist of the Year awards, respectively.

Nqobile Tshili, also of The Chronicle, was runner-up in two categories — Sino— Zimbabwe Relations Journalist of the Year and the News Journalist of the Year.

The awards are organised by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.
