ZIMBABWE will tomorrow join India in celebrating International Yoga Day, an event that is vital in promoting good health, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has said.

Indians regard yoga as one of the most effective methods of establishing a connection between the body and mind.

Yoga is performed through maintaining a healthy diet and undertaking breathing and physical postures for the relaxation of the body and mind.

The event, which has earned global recognition, will run under the theme Yoga for “Wellness”, “Be with Yoga, Be at Home”.

In a statement, Minister Mutsvangwa said the day was an art of living meant to bring unity between the physical and spiritual being.

“I convey my greetings and felicitations on the occasion of International Day of Yoga which is celebrated with great fervour all over the world since its adoption by the United Nations in 2014.

“Yoga is known to have a beneficial effect, not just at the level of the body, but also on the mind.

“It helps develop human potential. Through yoga, which means unity, one becomes aware of the natural connection that human beings have with their surroundings,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa urged citizens to adhere to good health.

“The importance of staying healthy cannot be overstated especially as the world is under the dark shadow of Covid-19. On the international day of Yoga 2021, I urge everyone to take full precautions and develop your immunity through a healthy lifestyle and physical exercises, to defeat the pandemic.

“Beyond its immediate impact on physical health, Covid-19 has also exacerbated psychological suffering and mental health problems, including depression and anxiety,” she said.

This year’s celebrations, organised by the Embassy of India, will be aired on Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, giving the nation an opportunity to learn more about yoga and its benefits.
