THE African Association of Financial Forensic Analysts (AAFFA) will host a Financial Forensic and Witness Conference in Harare on Thursday and Friday.

The conference is in part designed to sensitise the market about financial forensic audits and how they can be used in courts of law.Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, will deliver the keynote address.Speakers will include the chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mrs Willia Bonyongwe; president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Zimbabwe, Ms Gloria Zvaravanhu; and executive director of the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe, Mr Loughty Dube.

Discussions will cover areas such as forensic analysis, economic damage calculations, computer forensic analysis, financial statement misrepresentation and fraud prevention detection and responses. It will also cover bankruptcy, insolvency, and restructuring.

Last year, the United States-based National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts set up its base for Africa operations in Zimbabwe by appointing a local expert to head AAFFA.AAFFA also has portfolios in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia.

It is hoped that deliberations at the conference will help increase understanding of the professional responsibilities and legal underpinnings necessary to provide credible financial forensic services.

The demand for financial forensics is forecast to rise because of the increased regulation and regulatory enforcement, financial crimes, bankruptcies and corporate restructurings.
