THE world is panicking over the coronavirus pandemic. This is understandable considering the virus, also known as Covid-19, is spreading like veld fire in most parts of the world.

The magnitude of people either being infected or dying from the disease is disturbing. Certainly this is the reason why there is anxiety in every part of the globe.

Most countries, if not all, were caught flat-footed by the pandemic.

Covid-19 started late last year in the Chinese city of Wuhan (Hubei Province).

People in the conurbation started having an unusual pneumonia that was spreading faster than any other disease.

But it is the preparedness in our African continent that most people, myself included, are worried about.

Out of ignorance or lack of proper information, most Africans and some of our fellow countrymen did not believe that the disease could affect them.

But after a spate of news headlines showing new cases in parts of Africa, including South Africa and Rwanda going on total lockdown, and Zimbabwe registering its first coronavirus death, reality is beginning to sink for many.

So much needs to be done to make sure that we are safe from the disease as a nation.

Well, the Creator has answers to all the above questions. However, preventing infections must become a primary focus for everyone. You have to play your role each and every day.

Experts opine the coronavirus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets that launch into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Covid-19 also spreads mostly through person-to-person contact, especially within a radius of 1,8 metres.

You can stay up to date with the latest information on Covid-19 from the World Health Organisation website, including national and local public health authorities.

These sources of information can help you understand how the virus spreads and, equally, how it can be prevented.

But the basics to fight the pandemic are easy to understand. To combat further spread, one should start by acknowledging that they are not an exception with regards to contracting the disease.

Take precaution always and make sure you are also protecting the people around you. Where necessary, make sure you wear your mask to prevent your spit from infecting the air. Gloves can prevent you from getting into direct contact with contaminated areas. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth all the time.

Also make use of hand sanitisers, including sanitising door handles and other gadgets like phones, which we can easily wipe with a sanitised cloth.

Thus, let us all make sure no further life is lost to Covid-19. It is possible!

Of importance at the moment is for one to stay at home if possible.

Public gatherings must be avoided.

At times, one may be moving around spreading the disease unknowingly; thus, to be safe, minimise contact with the outside world. If precautions are taken, the coronavirus scourge will soon be over and our lives back to normal. God speaks to us in many ways just like he did during the times of Noah. It is important that we listen when he speaks to us through his emissaries so that we do not perish.

Our hope at the moment lies with the Almighty.  Let us join hands and continue praying against this pandemic.

But again, always remember, it is you who can stop the spread of the virus by taking the necessary precautions.

 Quote of the Week:

It is you who can stop the spread of the virus by taking necessary precautions.
