The Confederation of African Volleyball Region V Club Championship finalists, Support Unit men have received a major boost in their preparations for the forthcoming Continental Club Championships.

The policemen won the Sports Team of the Year award during the Support Unit Province End of Year function at their head office in Harare last week.

The accolade follows the team’s qualification for the CAVB Continental Club Championships after reaching the finals of the regional qualifiers held in Mozambique in last December.

The Continental tournament has been set for March 3-17, with Egypt set to be confirmed as hosts.

Support Unit assistant coach, Donald Chademana, said their recognition challenges them to aim higher.

He said: “This award is an honour, it is the second time to win it and it’s quite an achievement considering we have so many competitive teams in Support Unit. It gives us a challenge as we have been coming second in most of the tournaments, it has been a good achievement, but it sets our standards even higher.

Support Unit will be making their debut appearance at the Continental showpiece and Chademana said they will be going there to learn.

He said they have already started their preparations.

“We hope that this year we will perform better than what we did last year.

“We are going there to learn, it’s a very big stage where we need to prepare sufficiently, if we participate well we might probably reach the quarter-finals.

“This has been a project and it’s now bearing fruit because we have been able to keep these boys together.

“We have already started preparations and our schedule has seen us go through three training sessions mainly gym work and some light volleyball,” said Chademana.

The Support Unit Volleyball team chairman Mandlenkosi Ndlovu thanked his bosses for being supportive to the team.

He said the award would boost the morale of the team in their preparations.

“We are moving forward,” Ndlovu said. “As for the authority to participate, everything has been done, we are getting all the support that we need from the commanding officer and the organisation at large.

“Preparations are underway in terms of fundraising activities; very soon I think we are going to hold some concerts.

“The award will go a long way in boosting the morale of the club,” he said.
